Italy Seeks Word Cup Victory

Author: Martin Milius
June 14, 2010 - Cape Town, Italy - epa02202271 Italy's national soccer team players (top row, L-R) Gianluca Zambrotta, Vincenzo Iaquinta, Alberto Gilardino, Domenico Criscito, Giogio Chiellini, goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon; (front row, L-R) Claudio Marchisio, Riccardo Montolivo, Fabio Cannavaro, Daniele De Rossi, Simone Pepe pose before the FIFA World Cup 2010 group F match Italy vs Paraguay at the Green Point stadium in Cape Town, South Africa, 14 June 2010.

The stadium was filled with people. They came to watch a match filled with blood, sweat, and tears. For years, the Coliseum housed these death games. But gone are the days of gladiators fighting to the death. The Coliseum’s shattered shell stands as a reminder of the end of a vicious era.

Today the games have changed. Football summons Italian crowds by the masses, especially during the World Cup. Players are suited in vibrant Mediterranean blue uniforms and cleats. This color represents the Savoia royalty that ruled Italy from 1861 to 1946.

In football matches, these uniforms are often stained with blood, sweat, and tears. However these warriors don’t kill, they kick. They run down the field, into their enemy’s territory. They dodge opponents, make passes, and score goals. They are heroes.

Last World Cup, the Italians dominated France to claim the world title. This title rests as number four under Italy’s belt. This week Italy will continue to seek victory and fans will fill the stadium.
